The great Torii and Deer

The great Torii and Deer

In recent years, there have been some problems with the deer population as a result of contact with people.

Deer moving toward crowded areas, and overpopulaion have created incidents with people, both harming the natural environment and also causing injury to  tourists.

The deer are being hurt by eating inedible debris, which accumulates in their stomachs and damages their health causing nutrition problems.

"Raccoon dogs" appear frequently in Miyajima, too.

They did not turn up for a while, but they have been seen recently again.

They appear in the daytime with luck. You might encounter with a "white raccoon dog" with more luck!?

Wild Birds

In Miyajima, and as part of its rich nature, there are many wild birds observed throughout the year.

There are already many confirmed bird species, including 31 types of sedentary birds, 19 types of summer birds, 54 types of winter birds, and 32 types of emigrating birds which make up 135 types in total.

In an area of only 30 km in diameter, these birds can be found on the beach, by the water, in town, and in the mountaneous regions.

This is is very rare in Japan.
