Nishi-no-matsubara
This is the spot where stone lanterns are lined up in a row. There are great views of Itsukushima Shrine, and you can also view the lights of the Otorii and Mikasanohama beach at the same time across Nishi-no-matubara.
The Asebi Walking Path
This is a 700 m long walking path from Omoto Park through Daishoin. It is called Asebi (Piereis Japonica) because there is an Asebi community along the path. It is enjoyable to walk through, and the view from the hilltop where Tahoto is located is also very beautiful.
Omoto Park
This is a unique place where giant fir trees are grown by the seashore. The salty tang of the sea and the fragrance of the forest blend well. In the park, there is a very old shrine called Omoto Shrine, which is said to have been built even before the Itsukushima Shrine.
Momiji Dani Park
A good time to visit is during the changing of the seasons, with cherry blossoms in spring, fresh green leaves in summer, and autumnal tints in the fall. The best time to visit is when 200 maple trees change color in autumn. It is an awesome sight.
Shinomiya Shrine and Tanomosan
‘Tanomosan’ is held on August 1st by the old calendar at the Shinomiya Shrine, which is a branch shrine of Itsukushima Shrine.
This festival originated when people loaded their offerings on a handmade boat called ‘Tanomosan’ in order to express their gratitude in growing agricultural products.
The boats were then floated on the waves heading to Oinari in Ono Cho, the other side of the beach.
Miyajima Historical Folklore Museum
This is a museum located at a residence where a successful soy sauce business was located from the Edo period to the Meiji period.
There is written folklore from the people and the events of that time, and about their lifestyle. There are also displays of famous statues that had connections with Miyajima.
Omote Sando Shotengai
There are souvenir shops, restaurants and inns lining the street. There are about eleven Momiji Manjyu shops where they have their special cuisine and you are able to taste the fresly baked Momiji Manjyu right away.
Miyajima Aquarium
This is the only aquarium where the theme is the Seto Inland Sea. You are able to observe the whales and finless porpoises that are found in the Seto Inland Sea, and you can observe the penguins that swim as if they are flying in the sea. There is exhibition of an oyster raft that is used to demonstrate oyster farming.
